La Muta (left) and Dona Gravida (right) by Raphael, dating from 1504 to 1508. These portraits inspired the following garments. Florence was a hub for textiles, but in general the residents considered it to be in good taste to wear modest clothing. That could be one reason there are so few examples in the portrait art of the elaborate fabrics that were available. |

The gown is blue linen trimmed in a monochrome black brocade on the bodice. The bodice is innerlined with canvas and side-laced on one side. The skirt is trimmed with slashed linen gards with silk puffs based on my interpretation of a Titian fresco in Padova. The sleeves are attached at the shoulder and trimmed in silver braid, real pearls and silk embroidery. Made in 1994. Photographed in 2007. |
