16th Century Tour of Italy, 1520-1530

Venetian Virtue, 1520-1530

This picture inspired my first real attempt at recreating a garment that was inspired by period art. I made my version in 1991 when, as a starving college student, I could barely afford the medium weight cotton of the dress. I was very enthusiastic, working alone and with no clue to who Janet Arnold was nor with any previous experience or training in workng with the art of the tailor. I self-draped and patterned the dress on myself, worked in the dimly light basement of my mom's basement and completed this project learning as I went.

These pictures were taken in June, 2009, and the cotton has stood up fairly well over time, but it's become fragile and is "officially retired", earning a place of honor in my closet.

In 1992 I helped some friends make similar dresses inspired by Titian and Lotto. As soon as I can get some pictures I'll post those, too.

As a side note, I really like the art of Lorenzo Lotto. A contemporary of Titian who also lived in region of Venezia, he kept meticulous records of payments and, according to some writers and translators, was bitter about being overlooked and underappreciated. I want to know more about the person who made a living by creating art and meeting deadlines. Titian, on the other hand, was notorious for accepting commissions and then not following through or for assigning the work to an apprentice. Two very different men who approached their art with different work ethics.
